So I am getting ready to dig up the weeds from the garden, last year's as well. We have lettuce and spinach to start plus asparagus roots. We have been wanting to put in asparagus since we started this whole gardening thing a few years ago and now we have it!
I have just laid out the hexagonal patterns for the beds, per "How To Grow More Vegetables..." by John Jeavons. I am very excited about putting in the new plants and I look forward to putting together the rest of the garden when it is warmer.
We will be doing bush beans for the first time this year. We decided to cut back on the types of plants we are putting in, using only the ones that seem to work well in our soil. We have a compost bin that has some nice aged compost from the past few years. I plan to start a new bin and skim the top foot or so from the current one (with the fresher compost) and start fresh (so to speak). Quester plans on helping put a new bin together.
The only thing about gardening, for me, is weeding and digging up the old beds. I just don't have a lot of motivation to do so except the results... lots of fresh veggies! So I will do it, I just tend to wait until the last minute. This week I plan on putting in the spinach and lettuce and towards the end of the week I will put in the asparagus.
One of the things I have found about using Jeavons book is the amount of weeding I need to do over the course of the year is significantly less than I thought. Which, for me, as a casual gardener(TM), is great! I am glad I have help with some of the tasks and I hope the whole process will be able to be expanded once I find some more motivated people to help out.
Is there anyone out there that wants to help out and learn about organic raised bed intensive gardening? Come get your hands dirty! Send me a message and I am sure we can arrange something. Plus you will get a portion of the harvest, of course, too! Nothing like a fresh garden salad!
Alright, guess I will start working on the other bed designs. I will post a few pictures of them once I take some. :)
Blessings!
